Recruit

He was just another recruit
A loyal soldier doing his duty
He fought hard and well for his country
He loved his family
He had a six year old son

Today they bought his body in
The stretcher was covered in blood
He died of shrapnel wounds
He died in agony and terror
They gave him a medal

In the graveyard of home
A little boy tried to understand
Where is my daddy? he sobbed
The general smiled and gave the boy a flag
They lowered the body into the ground
Then they gave Mummy the medal
