I'm a big fan of The Mountain Goats, and this song in the particular because it's a little bit silly, but works nonetheless. It's surreal. And um... here's me covering it (advert!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0KugK9vlA0

Cool air falls through the venetian blinds
and the planets in the heavens are perfectly aligned
I take in my surroundings, I memorise them all
the scuff marks on the stone floor,
the powder burns on the eastern wall

There's a monkey in the basement,
how did the monkey get there?

There's a monkey in the basement,
where did the monkey come from?

The animal noises you used to make,
the andalusian coral snake
all pale when standing beside this room
and the heavy hot rains and the sonic boom

There's a monkey in the basement,
where did the monkey come from?

There's a monkey in the basement,
how did the monkey get there?

I like!! :D Your version is a bit different lyric wise and otherwise but I really like both your cover and the original (found this one on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU4tNOcj308&feature=related that I compared with)! Thanks for exposing me to The Monkey Song - it's quite catchy and addictive to listen to! :)

The lyrics are identical, but yah. I did it in a lower register. I'm considering uploading a cover in the higher pitch too; I think I'm lucky to have quite a large range.

Na'a, I beg to differ...The original sings "Cool air comes through..." and you sing "Cool air falls through..." and in the refrain you have reversed the order of "how did the monkey get there" with "where did the monkey come from" line...It also sounds like the original is singing "the air pollution coral snake" but I could be wrong about that...The original is sung with more power/emphasis on particular in words and you sing in a more soothing harmonious way giving more equal importance to all words ;)...

Ah, but what you're listening to isn't the original - it's a live performance ;)
I sing it how it's sung on record, although in that lower, softer register.

Aha :)...Well, either way, very nicely sung!

Um, sneaky advert from Nature; there's a garden in the bathroom! =P I like your second cover of the song even better!! :)

Edit (new sneaky advert from Nature (I know, has she got nothing better to do?! :p): There's a Garden in the bed room!!!! =P and I really like your third cover too - the guitar sounds better and it sounds pretty cool with your British accent finally coming through properly in this song. So here's a :1st: from me...
