King Crimson is a force for prog on a deific scale. Beyond that, the rest is... also mostly prog rock. Yes, Rush, Jethro Tull, and EL&P. I'm also looking into getting my hands on some Van der Graaf Generator.
You know, even though I know it's against the standing rule of American jingoism, I've gotta say... Brits know what they're about when it comes to rock. Also, because I have to say it...
Squirrel's foot, iron claw,
Neurosurgeons scream for more,
At paranoia's poison door -
21st century sciuroid man!

However... Sciuroid! King Crimson is absolute win! I can't believe I've run into another prog rock fan on a writing forum. Fripp is God.

Robert Fripp is the only member of King Crimson that has survived from start to finish. The entire rest of the band gets replaced every few albums. It's a beautiful cycle.

I'm listening to a lot of deftones right now...I love Chino's lyrics.
"Universe, surrounds
When you're ready, it waits for us
to leave this earth, come on
they're calling your name out
I don't know, I could stay or leave,
either way
'cause the comet could take us
all the way
through
Goodbye. Safe. Heaven. New.
I'll be waving
goodbye
Return to see,
everything looks the same
I don't know if the change
made was grave,
'cause the craving remains the same
Goodbye. Safe. Heaven. New.
I'll be waving
goodbye "

Almost impossible to answer. I have vast tastes from a range of genres. My mixtapes (which are no longer 'tapes' but CDRs) drive people loopy.
One of my favourite artists is Richard Ashcroft (lead singer of The Verve). His solo albums are incredible. In particular Alone With Everybody and Human Conditions. He's one of the best lyricists this country has ever produced. Something that perhaps, sadly, he'll only be fully appreciated for posthumously.
Marilyn Manson. A very much misunderstood artist due to the imagery he portrays, and the backdrop of his artistry. He's the Francis Bacon of the music world.
Currently listening to Santogold, and Grace Jones’ new albums. Both excellent.
Kate Bush. What can I say. This is an artist that I've overlooked for many years. I used to like her singles as a kid, but picking up her albums this year I cannot believe how individual, innovative and creative this woman is. Her latest album from 2004, called Ariel, is a masterpiece.
Gnarls Barkley. Both albums. Just great.
Classical music and Hip Hop are styles that have numerous composers/artists that interest me. From Holst to Rakim, Dvorak to Gza, Shostakovich to MD7. Hip Hop has dominated the best part of my music-listening life, and something I invested a great deal of time in.
Also, Rock, Reggae and their sub-genres. I used to listen to a lot of Reggae, but I'm increasingly listening to the Rock classics.
James Brown. This man's music has probably clocked the most millage on my sound systems over the years. Vinyl, Tapes and CD revolutions combined. Saw him live a couple of years before he died. Absolutely amazing, even that late into his career.
Lastly, Jose Gonzalez. A breath of fresh air.

I can send you a link to some of his music on youtube if you like. I am not sure whether you know it or not but bell x1 and Damien Rice started out in the same band called Juniper before they split up and made it big separately, juniper had a song called weatherman which was fairly good, I like Connon ball and the blowers daughter on the O album.

I have a pretty wide taste in music, but Tool is by far my favorite band
Maynard creates genius lyrics and has perhaps the most amazing vocals I have ever heard; the man can convey any emotion imaginable.
Justin is one of the most creative and original bassists out there, and my favorite of all of them. His use of effects and pedals create some outstanding bass lines; my favorite being Disposition.
Adam creates some incredibly trippy and emotional riffs. Not the fastest guitarist but an amazing one nonetheless.
Danny is a borderline God. He is without a doubt one of the greatest drummers to ever live. He holds everything together, and in Ticks and Leeches he is a damn octopus.
My favorite band, I highly doubt they will ever be replaced as my number one.
