We are continually improving this great service that we offer in the hopes of helping other sites grow in the right direction and give other admins some thorough feedback from a visitor's perspective. Since some of the new changes are harder to find info about, and some features haven't been explained at all yet, here is a comprehensive FAQ to help you understand the review process here at TAZ.

Q: What is the purpose of the Community Review section?

A: The intended purpose of the Forum Review is to allow Bulletin Board Administrators to submit their Online Communities to the members and staff of The Admin Zone for comments and constructive criticism. This feedback can be immensely valuable for determining what steps might be taken to help a Community grow larger and stronger. This process should be taken seriously by all involved.

Q: Are members also allowed to post websites for review, or is this board strictly for forums only?

A: At this point in time, our reviews are intended to help forum owners. There may be a time in the future where we open up and offer reviews to all kinds of sites such as blogs and static html, but as of now our focus is specific to forums only.

Q: Should I be worried about the reviewers making fun of me or my site?

A: No. While we may point out things that need improvement or things that may turn a visitor away from your site, we are doing so in the hopes that you'll find a better solution. We're here to help your forum grow into something great, not say harsh things that don't help in any way.

Anyone reviewing a Forum should do so in a fair and respectful manner. It's often helpful if the opening comment is an upbeat one. Areas needing improvement should be pointed out diplomatically, along with recommendations for making those improvements. Let's not forget that these Communities have a lot of time and effort invested in them, and that by opening the door to public scrutiny these Admins are kind of laying it on the line - they should not be made to feel uncomfortable. And don't neglect to point out the positive aspects of the Community - you never know where the next great idea for your Forum will come from!

Those submitting their Boards for review should do so with the understanding that the purpose of the exercise is to be critiqued by one's peers. This is not a place to show off your Forum so much as a venue for others to expose any weaknesses which might have been missed so that they can be improved upon. We want to help you polish your Forums to a brilliant shine! Any critical comments are meant to do just that. If you disagree with a point that's been made than say so - make it a topic for discussion.

Q: What are some of the things that the official reviewers will evaluate at my site?

A: We will do our best to truly dig deep and get a good understanding of the dynamics of your forum, and take a close look at some of the more important factors of what makes a site good or bad. A few of these questions we ask ourselves when we review a site are....

What was your first impression when the front page loaded?

Portal/Homepage - Is there enough information is on it? Or too much? Is it too cluttered? Too busy? Is there a prominent link to the Main Forum Page? Are the colors pleasing? Is the contrast OK? Is everything easy to read?

Logo/Banner - Is it the default one that came with the Forum software or is it custom? Does it fit with the Theme of the Community? Does it look professionally done?

Main Forum Page - Are the colors pleasing? Is the contrast OK? Is everything easily read? Are there too many Forums, or too few? Is there a clear Theme presented? Is it well organized and laid out? Is there more than one style option? Is it out of the box standard software or is it customized? How long does it take to load? Is there a Privacy Policy, Mission Statement, About Us, Contact Us, FAQ, TOS, etc. evident? Is the guest welcome message adequate? Has Search Engine Optimization been undertaken? How large is the Board? How much activity is there?

Forums - Are there any Forums missing which should be present such as Introduce Yourself, Chit Chat, Site News/Feedback, or any that pertain to the particular Theme of the Board?

Community - Describe your impression of the Community after reading through some of the Threads. Is the Board well moderated? Is the staff size adequate for the traffic? Do the members seem to enjoy themselves and get along with each other? Are they having fun? Are they prolific posters?

Advertising - Are there ads on the Forums? Do they intrude on the browsing experience?

Other Features - Are there additional features such as Galleries, Arcades, Articles, Links, etc. Are they implemented well?

Q: I've heard you have requirements that sites must meet to qualify for an official review, what are they?

A: To qualify for a review, your site must meet the following requirements. This is to ensure that we're not facing a constant barrage of sites that just opened last week and don't really have any content to analyze.

* Activity (must meet 3 of 4):
o 25 active members
o 25 threads
o 250 posts
o 25 days uptime

Non-genuine content such as fake members, bots, newsfeeds, spam threads, etc...may be ignored.
* Graphics (must meet 2 of 3):
o Logo/banner created
This cannot be unmodified text or the image that came with the software or skin.
o Main forum icons customized
You do not have to do all the buttons and minor graphics, though it'd be nice.
o Original skin created
This can be a bought item, but you must take responsibility for its appearance. If you download a broken style, don't blame it on the creator, learn how to fix your styles and take responsibility for how your site looks.

Q: What do I need to include in my review request thread?

A: Instructions for submitting your Forum for review:

* Please include forum name in your post titles.
* Information to include: Site name, url, topic, software used, launch date.
* If you would like for our Review Team and other TAZ Members to focus their attentions on a particular area or feature you are looking to improve, please say so.
* If your site has restricted access please provide a username/password. It's recommended that you disable PM privileges for this test account and obviously don't assign any mod/admin permissions to it. .

Q: How long does it take to receive a review?

A: Reviews are commonly taken in chronological order by whomever is currently on the Review Team. Because they are not specifically 'assigned' to a Reviewer, individuals may do whichever ones they prefer and whenever they wish. Staff have individual expectations of how many they will do per week, agreed upon at the start of their employ with TAZ. At this time, anyone (on the Review Team or just a site member) can do a review, but we must request that it follow the template and quality expectations if it is to be considered official and the thread marked as Reviewed. A review can take anywhere from 24/48 hours to even a week after your request is made.***

Q: How can I ensure that my review doesn't get missed?

A:

Properly formatting your request - Observing the expectations of the pre-posting screen can do wonders for getting your review attended to in a timely fashion. Omitting some component like member count, launch date or a test log in (if required) can delay a review and may even look somewhat fishy. This forum was created to make use of the topic hover preview and by following the template this gives Reviewers an idea of what to expect.

Not bumping your thread - There's very few things more irritating to staff than thread-bumping. The thread markers make it immediately obvious to all which reviews are yet to be done. We also have a list of Requests Awaiting Review (which is updated regularly) in the private Reviewers Forum, and which is kept in chronological order and so we are very much aware of where in the list your site is.

Q: Is there a time frame between having one review done and having a second one done after the recommended changes have been made?

A: Short answer - 6 months.
Longer answer - We've come a long way in more narrowly defining the difference between "offering a review" and "ongoing consultancy". The former is a kind of one-shot evaluation of what's there, what's going on, etc; the latter is a kind of hand-holding that can devolve into a debate about right/wrong, better/worse, and staff reviewers don't really have the time for that nor are they hired to do it. Some can continue to engage the requesting admin, if they so choose, or clarify something in the original assessment that may not have been understood, but we strongly caution staff against going multiple rounds in a single review 'cycle'.

Physical changes gto a forum, as recommended by a Reviewer, do not guarantee more traffic/members/revenue/longevity, but this is what they are meant to accomplish. That said, it's going to be a few months before the changes can be reassessed fairly because they have provided genuine, measurable results.

Q: Are there any member requirements to be able to post a Review Request?

A: There are two member requirements - a post count of 10 and being registered on TAZ for at least 1 week.

Q: I'm seeing these post icons next to threads, what do they mean?

A: These icons are a way for our official reviewers to keep track of which sites have been looked at, and what type of review they qualify for if they do in fact meet our requirements at all.

- The reviewed icon is used for sites that qualified for and has already received an official review. These topics are left open for more questions or discussion, as well as general feedback from the public.

- The declined icon is used to indicate a site that likely made no effort to read or follow our guidelines, and are nowhere close to qualifying for a review. These threads are subject to being closed, having any links removed, deleted, or any other action we deem appropriate. If you just opened your site last week and only have 4 members, or you didn't bother to follow our posting instructions, your thread will most likely be deleted.

- The deferred icon indicates a site that comes close to qualifying and has made a reasonable effort to follow our instructions. These requests will usually include a reply stating to come back when you have met the requirements, and you will be given an official review when your site qualifies.

- The quickie icon may be used in some cases where a quickie review may be more appropriate than a full review. This will most likely not be used much, but it does provide another option to our review team. Perhaps your forum meets our requirements, but one particular portion of your site needs immediate attention and the rest is irrelevant until you fix the major problem...or maybe you've asked us to only focus on one particular element of your forum, such as the graphics only. These are a couple of examples that may warrant the "quickie" icon.

Q: Eek! My site didn't get a great review. What happened?

A: When all is said and done no two reviews will be the same and no two reviewers will give you an identical viewpoint. If you're looking for us to be tuned to your way of thinking and expect us to heap praises on you, you'll be disappointed.

* Don't expect a totally unbiased review. Each of us has our own views and expectations of how a community should be. We are all subjective though we try our best to understand your community from the average user's perspective. We might be way off target in many of our observations from your point of view. There is nothing "right" or "wrong" about it. After all, you know your community best, so it's up to you to take home what you find useful from the review making allowances for individual bias.
* Please don't take reviews personally. Most likely we don't know anything about you or your community. Online forums are complex animals. It takes weeks and maybe months of participation to truly gauge social interaction in a community. So there is nothing personal intended in negative feedback. Rather we're just being honest about certain visible and obvious flaws in your forum.
* If you have something very particular to be reviewed in your community, please tell us at the beginning. We might miss aspects of your site which might be totally obvious to you. It's natural when we're looking at the bigger picture and we cannot always predict what kind of a review you're looking for. In the same vein, if you're particularly sensitive to critique on certain aspects, say so and we'll try and avoid them.

Knowing what you're after in a review is a great help for all of us. Please help us improve our reviews by helping us with these aspects.

***At present there is a waiting list of sites going back 2 months. This is due to two things - holidays and Review Staff shortage. We do regret and apologise if you've been waiting a while and we thank you for your patience, but more time actually works in your favour. It will give you more opportunities to get members, build content and pore over TAZ for ways to improve before an official visit is made!

Please do not submit forums that have only been able to qualify due to multiple post-exchanges (originating on TAZ or elsewhere), that have recently left the TAZ Launch Team's care, or that appear to qualify because you have bought, bartered, or assimilated posts/members from another source. This does not provide a realistic basis upon which to assess the level of community participation and commitment on your forum, negating fully half of a standard review.

You may, instead, ask for a "Quickie" regarding your site's appearance, and any other suggestions regarding activity will be considered a bonus. It is recommended that you wait for the prerequisite period to pass and for additional posts to accumulate from actual members of your forum; i.e., the pre-review qualifications are "reset" in these circumstances, and though your launch date will not change, the people commenting to your board will represent genuine interaction.

WHY IS THIS?

The Launch Team, the Exchange, the Community Cooperative, and--if you are a Premium Member--the Classifieds sections of TAZ are intended to be your "leg up" over the rest of the world, a way for you to improve the apparent activity and appearance of your board to general members and potential joins. It is not, however, a substitute for any true measure of your forum's operations, interactions, and management. Put simply, you can fool everyone else, but not the people who helped you fool them in the first place.
