View Full Version : how do you write?

i've often mused myself with the contemplations of what goes into ones poetry.
i tend to write off the top of my head, whatever comes to mind at any given moment. most of my poetry has never been written, therefore been forgotten. i write my experiences, my feelings, my memories, my dreams. most may never understand my writings, only understand how they perceive it. i guess i write for myself, only to better understand what i've been through.
what influences do you have when you write?
Among my influences I count pretty much every poem I have ever read. How I write depends on how I'm feeling. Sometimes I can write a very lengthy poem in a few days and other times I can write a short poem for months. I can edit a poem once or twice or even ten times, it all depends. It has been said that a poem is never finished only abandoned. I agree with that 100%. I can't think of a poem I have written that I wouldn't be willing to make a change to it if I felt the change would improve the poem. Of course I don't always agree with others about what would make a poem better or worse.

mostly it's my life. usually when i'm feeling depressed or when i'm angry. sometimes i can write from a song that i'm listening to which helps to start me off. other times i use nature like rain, or the ocean. i intend to write one about a forest or other aspects of nature soon. but mostly i write from my life and i write to live and live to write. if i couldn't write i wouldn't be able to deal with things all too well.

For my poetry, generally I write depending on my mood at the particular moment.
Sometimes I have this strong urge to write, but I have nothing to write about. At times like those I look outside or at recent events, and try to formulate something from that.
With my more emotional poetry, sometimes I don't write from my own experience. I write as if I were someone else.
I find the different perspective to be refreshing.

my muse is my life and listening to music helps bring out some deeper emotions or feelings to help along the write.....

I try and write clever poetry..... I think its great just adressing how you feel and everything but being prefectly honest, unless its a spectacular representation of thoughts and emotions i dont rate poetry like that that well. therefore i try not to write like that.
Yes, i do write about what goes on in my life, but its not personal. I dont write to music because i think it provokes more thought, and is not thought provoking. I try mainly to give poetry a purpose, like the poets of old who expressed a view on something else whilst discussing or describing a situation, experience or set of feelings..... that way i think its got a different dimension and doesnt just drag into the category of self obsessive emotions, which alot of people seem to express through poetry.
Furthermore, i like to adopt differing structures and styles, because i believe structure can be 50% of a poem, and to some means you can extrapolate further emotions or views from the structure, rhyme scheme or punctuation.
Lastly, i write as i see fit. Whether a poem takes ten minutes and is revised 10 days later or whether a mood hits and out flows your words: i think no one can really say that they write poetry in one manner everytime.

i'm not particularly good at poetry.
i just like it.
i don't spend days and days on poetry because i have the attention span of a gnat.
most of mine take me about ten minutes hence why they're total crap.
i usually get one line in my head that i really like then i can't find anything good enough to mould around it.

Im sure there are influences, and music helps for me, but generally, i sit down, think of emotive words, and form poetry. i dotn really think when i write, i just...write. difficult to describe really... but once ive started writing, i can write for hours ^.^

Hmm, how do I write, thats a good question, the simplest answer I can think of is with a pencil and notepad. :) that usually works quite well.
