Who if anyone, is your favourite great writer/poet.
Question two, if they were alive today, and writing the same material as they did then - would they still be acknowledged as a 'great writer' or does time play its part.
What makes the, Keats, Wordsworth's, Byron's to name but a few, stand the test of time.

great poetry is timeless, the language may change > but not the impact on the reader

I would struggle to name just one since there are so many fine writers many of whom are still alive. Just scraping into the dead category though I would say Hughes is a firm favourite. Unfortunately too recently dead to answer part two.
Colmint makes a good point though it is the content that makes these poems/poets stand the test of time and I'm sure if any of the poets you have mentioned were still writing today but in the language of now then they would still be going strong.

I love Frank O'Hara, especially stuff like 'Having a Coke With You' or 'Poem' (Lara Turner has collapsed), where it's on such a human, identifiable level, trivial almost. I have to admit, a lot of what I write is inspired very specifically by him.

Jim Morrison.
I think he would be an even greater writer. I recall reading somewhere (perhaps it was the book Light My Fire that he had unfinished stories and plays sitting around. I think he would have slowly transitioned from being a rock star to focusing more on his poetry and writing.
