@chime, I love Saul williams. Have you heard his latest, if so what do you think?
@saturninesweetness Have you heard any other albums by Neutral Milk Hotel? Are they as good as In the Aeroplane? I will check out if you are feeling sinister, I've only heard Tigermilk and Dear Catastrophe Waitress.

@teeththronesandpassing:
The only album NMH has besides Aeroplane is On Avery Island, and (maddeningly) I can't get my hands on it so I couldn't tell you if it was good or not.
Sadly, they haven't produced any more albums since Aeroplane, although I do believe they have an EP out.

Lately I've been listening a lot to Bob Dylan's "Time Out of Mind", in fact I'm doing that now. So much inspiration to get there - I've also had John Lennon's "Mind Games" running, as well with Elton John's "Tumbleweed Connection". For me, at least, this is the best music ever.

I'm listening to the Kinks - the Informer!
Been listening to a lot of movie soundtracks recently. Really like some of the moody, atmospheric Sci-Fi ones like Alien, Solaris...etc
Been playing Clint Mansell's 'Moon' soundtrack to death. The opening track 'Welcome To Lunar Industries' is just superb!

Ok, so not an all time great, but recently been introduced to a band/group/whatever they are, called Girl Talk, album name is All Day, It is just track laid over track laid over track remixed together, and it makes for some wonderful listening trying to pick out all the familiar riffs. Have a go, see what you think. Or there is an interactive site that plays the album, and lists what tracks in the mix feature at that particular time, not as much fun, but still great to listen to without having to buy the album. try it here. http://alldaysamples.com/
Track called "The man who isn't there" by Oren Lavie....lovely and melancholic.

Lovely
dabnorfish's poem 'Why Steinbeck Wept' (http://www.thepoetryforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=20100) reminded me of this great, melancholic piece by Erik Satie. Been playing it over & over...

I definitely second John's motion on Mumford and Sons' album. What a work of art. Inspirational and original. Modern music with an old-world soul and profound lyrics.
To add to the list, an earlier album...
"Lifted or The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground" by Bright Eyes from 2002. This is easily one of my favorite albums of all time, and dare I say one of the most original. Connor Oberst is an incredibly gifted artist, and though I don't see eye to eye with him on particular subjects, his writing prowess is something of a marvel.

I'm at risk of being completely out of touch with everyone here. I don't tend to listen to songs, probably something to do with the fact my hearing is screwed anyway.
Anyhoo, I prefer not having to try and interpret what people are singing (people talking is bad enough) so I blast my ears with beautiful ambient music, and this has been played a lot recently:

There's tons of music like this for free on many many netlabels. Can't remember the last time I actually paid for music.

Been listening to Chris Cornell's 'Songbook' album for the past couple weeks.

That video is for the album version of "The Keeper" which appears on the Machinegun Preacher soundtrack. There's a terrific acoustic version on Songbook along with a ton of other good stuff.
